The club’s first camping weekend for the year was held on the weekend of the 25th and 26th of June. It was our Christmas in June event and all cabins were full for the weekend, with five cabins also being booked for the Friday night. Although it was quite cool, those the ventured up on Friday to make the most of a full weekend enjoyed the get together of the small pack of beagles.

All our happy campers were established on Saturday and after lunch we took off for our first walk for the weekend. The track through the rainforest and along the escarpment looking south towards Byron Bay was very good and the beagles sniffed their way along the track. While the walk back up the hill tested a few of the two-legged trekkers, the enjoyment had by the beagles and the view along the trail made it well worthwhile.

Happy hour saw the off lead area full of happy (though tired) beagles and their owners enjoying a beagle’s life. There were lots of popular beagles who just had to be chased and barked at by all the other beagles. To be fair, they took turns at who they had to bark at.

Santa Paws made his arrival on Saturday afternoon for our regular get together and nibbles in the off lead area. Even though Santa Paws came bearing gifts for all the beagles, most of them didn’t take to kindly to this big four-legged monster walking around on two legs.

The traditional Christmas dinner for the 24 guests of roast Turkey, pork and beef, veggies and of course the table bonbons was followed by a relaxing time of games and talking about our favourite subjects.

Sunday morning didn’t see too many early risers but when they did arise, they had a spectacular clear winter view looking out over the Gold Coast Hinterland to greet them. A final run in the off lead area before heading back to Brisbane, with a couple of campers making it a very long weekend and staying on.

A big thanks must go to Tony Bulke and the team at Tailwaggers Retreat. Their hospitality and generosity to the club this weekend and in the past is greatly appreciated and I am sure will keep the cabins fully booked for any upcoming camping weekends.
